Verb

In this section we look at the grammar of verbs—their structure and form—and how we use them in spoken and written English.

Some languages have 30+ forms of a verb! English has 8 at most :)


Tense
The concept of tense in English is a method that we use to refer to time - past, present and future. Many languages use tense to talk about time. Other languages have no concept of tense at all, but of course they can still talk about time, using different methods.

Subjunctive
The English subjunctive is a special, relatively rare verb form that expresses something desired or imagined.We use the subjunctive mainly when talking about events that are not certain to happen.

for and since for Time
We often use for and since when talking about time.

about to
About to is not a tense. It is a special structure that we use to talk about the immediate future. If you are about to do something, you are going to do it very soon.

going to
Going to is not a tense. It is a special structure that we use to talk about the future.

Verb Classification
We divide verbs into two broad classifications:Helping Verbs and Main Verbs

Verb Forms
English verbs come in several forms. For example, the verb sing can be: sing, sang, sung, singing or sings. This is a total of 5 forms.

What is a Verb?
Verbs are sometimes described as "action words". This is partly true. Many verbs give the idea of action, of "doing" something. For example, words like run, fight, do and work all convey action.

Irregular Verbs List
This is a list of some irregular verbs in English. Of course, there are many others, but these are the more common irregular verbs.
